In the early 1940s, Philips established its lighting factory in Surabaya. Initially, operations started to manufacture and supply incandescent lamps to the Indonesian market. The factory developed competence quickly and added the first Vertical Tubular Lamp (VTL) and a glass factory in the 1970s.
In 1995, Surabaya Factory began operating as an International Production and Supply Center (IPSC) for the Asia Pacific Region - producing incandescent lamps (GLS), fluorescent lamps (TUD) and lamps components, utilizing the latest state-of-the-art "lead free" glass manufacturing equipment.
The glass components are widely supplied all around the world which makes Surabaya factory a very important factor in glass components supply in the world. Since then, Philips Lighting Surabaya is defined as "Best in Class" within Philips lighting business with the largest and most complex operation in the region with more than 500 SKU and 160 different product types serving numerous highly competitive and ever demanding markets. We meet international standards and export worldwide.
In November 2007, Philips made a substantial investment of 10 million US Dollar in this factory. This investment makes it the company's only fully owned operation worldwide that specializes in lead free stem glass manufacturing. The shift to lead free stem glass production will result in a 77% expansion of Philips Surabaya facility, where output will ramp up from 9,000 tons to 16,000 tons. Then additional investment to expand into T5 Master Production in March 2009 for 20 million US Dollar.
