How do I remove the shaving heads of my Philips Shaver?

Published on 30 August 2023
To deep clean your Philips Shaver, you need to know how to replace the shaving heads of your shaver. Follow the instructions below on how to do this. Please keep in mind that the instructions for your specific shaver may be different. It is best to consult your user manual for details.

For visual instructions, watch the video below on how to replace the shaving heads on your Philips Shaver. This video belongs to the S9000 range but also applies to the S1000, S3000, S6000 range and also to some new shavers from the S5000 and S7000 range.

Shavers with individual retaining rings

Switch off your shaver and follow the steps below.
  1. Pull the shaving head holder off the body of the shaving unit.
  2. Twist the retaining rings inside your shaving head holder and pull them out one by one.
  3. Remove the shaving heads from the shaving head holder.
  4. Each shaving head consists of a cutter and a guard. Please keep in mind that the cutter and guard are not interchangeable. So make sure you keep them together.
  5. Put the shaving heads back into the shaving head holder.
  6. Reattach the shaving head holder to the bottom part of the shaving unit.

Shavers with a retaining frame

If your shaver uses a retaining frame to hold the shaving heads in place, follow the instructions below to remove and reassemble them.

Always ensure your shaver is turned off before removing the shaving heads.
  1. Press the shaving unit release button to open the shaving unit, then pull the shaving unit off the shaver.
  2. Turn the lock counterclockwise and lift off the retaining frame.
  3. Remove the shaving heads from the shaving unit.
  4. Remove each shaving head from the holder, and clean each part individually. Note that shaving heads and holders are part of a set, and the same shaving head should be placed back into the same holder.
  5. After cleaning the shaving heads and placing them back into their holders, insert them back into the shaving unit.
  6. Place the retaining frame onto the shaving head and turn the lock clockwise to fix the shaving heads in place.

How long does my skin need to adapt to new shaving heads?

If you are a new user of the Philips Shaver, or you have replaced the shaving heads, keep in mind that your skin needs to adapt to the (new) shaving heads. This means that your skin may feel slightly irritated in the beginning. Allow yourself an adjustment period of two to three weeks with your new Philips Shaver system. You can also use a gentle moisturizer or aftershave lotion to minimize skin irritation after shaving.

Some tips below to get the best result out of your Philips shaver and to avoid discomfort and irritation:
  • Make sure your skin is clean before using your Philips shaver.
  • Always make sure the shaving unit is in full contact with your skin.
  • Apply gentle pressure and move the shaving unit slowly, in circular movements over your skin.
  • Pre-trim long or hard to shave hair.
  • Allow some adjustment time period and give your skin some time to recover in between sessions.
  • When cleaning the shaving heads, cutter and guard, keep in mind they are all matching sets. If you accidentally put a cutter in the wrong shaving guard, it may take several weeks before optimal shaving performance is restored.
